Today, the treatment of cancers in children is performed by a multidisciplinary team including pediatric surgeons. Survival rates have improved significantly with this approach. Pediatric surgery is a branch of medicine that is often directly involved in the surgical treatment of solid tumors. It is also indirectly involved in the diagnosis and supportive treatment of cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, such as biopsy and placement of indwelling central catheters.
Tumors requiring surgical treatment in children include benign or malignant tumors originating from all organs and tissues that make up the respiratory, digestive, endocrine, vascular and excretory/reproductive systems (lung, stomach, intestines, liver, spleen, thyroid gland, pancreas, adrenal gland, kidney, bladder, urinary tract, ovaries, blood or lymph vessels, lymph nodes, other soft tissues, etc.). Some of these can also be congenital.
