Obesity surgery is a field that includes surgical procedures performed to achieve weight loss in overweight or obese individuals. These surgical interventions are generally preferred when other treatment methods such as diet and exercise are ineffective. Obesity surgery methods include sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass), gastric balloon, gastric banding, biliopancreatic diversion and metabolic surgery.
Stomach Reduction Surgeries: Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass)
Procedures such as Sleeve Gastrectomy, Bypass Surgery (RouxnY Gastric Bypass, Mini Gastric Bypass), Transit Bipartition, Biliopancreatic Diversion are usually performed for obesity.
Sleeve Gastrectomy (Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy):
Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is performed using 4 or 5 holes (standard method) and closed method (laparoscopic).
In addition to this, it can also be performed in suitable patients by using a 3-hole or a single hole.
Since the stomach is reduced vertically, food intake is reduced with mechanical effect. Due to the removal of the upper part of the stomach called the fundus, hunger after the surgery is also suppressed due to the decrease in the hunger hormone called Ghrelin.
The procedure takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. In the absence of complications, the average hospitalization period is 3 days. It is relatively not applied in patients with severe reflux and large gastric hernia.
Complications of the surgery may include complications of other surgical procedures (such as bleeding, herniation, other organ injuries). A specific complication of the surgery is leakage-leakage-fistula-opening from the top of the stapler line. This rate is around 3% in the literature.
The advantages of the procedure over other surgeries are that it can be technically performed in a shorter time, it is reversible, and it is more suitable for physiology.
Patients are called for early follow-up on the 10th postoperative day. The patient's general condition, blood findings, weight loss and adequate nutrition are checked. Dietitian evaluation is performed. Other recommended controls are 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month and 12th month. If there is no significant problem in the early control of the patient, he/she can also apply for the mentioned controls in other centers. The surgeon should definitely see the pathology result of the stomach removed during surgery.
leeve Gastrectomy is a frequently preferred method in the treatment of obesity. In this method, the stomach is reduced in size, reducing food intake and increasing the feeling of satiety. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, on the other hand, both shrinks the stomach and bypasses part of the intestines, thus reducing food absorption. Both methods give effective results in the treatment of obesity and obesity-related health problems.
Gastric Balloon
The gastric balloon is a minimally invasive method used in the treatment of obesity. The balloon is inserted into the stomach to increase its volume and thus reduce food intake. In this way, weight loss is achieved and obesity-related health risks are reduced. The gastric balloon method is usually used in addition to diet and exercise programs.
Gastric Banding
Gastric banding is a method used to shrink the stomach and control food intake. By placing the band around the stomach, the stomach volume decreases and therefore food intake decreases. This method is one of the preferred minimally invasive surgical options in the treatment of obesity.
Biliopancreatic Diversion
Biliopancreatic diversion is another method used in bariatric surgery. In this method, the stomach is reduced in size and food absorption is reduced by bypassing part of the intestines. Biliopancreatic diversion provides effective results in the treatment of obesity-related health problems, but requires a more invasive surgery than other methods.
Metabolic Surgery
Metabolic surgery refers to surgical procedures with metabolic effects in the treatment of obesity. These methods not only provide weight loss, but can also help control metabolic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Metabolic surgery plays an important role in the treatment of obesity-related health problems.
